The singer OSCAR LARROCA (Oscar Antonio Moretta) dies. His father was a guitar maker and a singer of rural songs. The personality we are celebrating died young; in spite of this he had a successful and varied career. He played in Domingo Federico’s orchestra. In his best period he was a singer with Alfredo De Angelis (1951-1958). Afterwards he toured America and only returned to Buenos Aires every once in a while.

On this date Enrique Rodríguez and Armando Moreno record LA VI LLEGAR. The previous year this tango had had a considerable success. First it was recorded by Miguel Caló with Raúl Iriarte (04/19/44) and then by Aníbal Troilo with Alberto Marino (06/27/44). The poet of Italian origin Julián Centeya wrote its lyrics and the music is by Enrique Francini, a violinist with Caló.

RAÚL IRIARTE (Rafael Fiorentino) dies: singer with a clear and elegant voice. He stopped performing with his real name because of Francisco Fiorentino’s fame. He came to the highest point in his career with Miguel Caló with whom he remained for almost five years (1943-1947). He traveled around America as a soloist and became the best ambassador of the famous decade of the 1940’s. He died in Bogotá, Colombia.

JORGE CALDARA dies. Bandoneonist, composer and conductor. As a child he studied music, but he had to abandon early because of the economic crisis of the 1930’s. In spite of this, when he was twenty he became Osvaldo Pugliese’s first bandoneon. He stayed with the maestro for a little over a decade. Afterwards he made an attempt as a conductor, but he died very young. He composed the music we are listening to now.

Date on which Osvaldo Pugliese records EL ARRANQUE, a tango composed by Julio De Caro, who recorded it in two occasions (1934 and 1951). It is known that when Pugliese made his debut with his orchestra in 1939 he offered a sound that was along the lines of the “Decarian” style, above all in his first years and in his instrumental interpretations. However, the rhythm was different.

RAÚL DE LOS HOYOS is born. Pianist and composer. His activity started at the end of the decade of the 1910’s, when the tango canción was born. The tango that we are listening to here he titled MIS NOCHES DEL ROYAL. El Zorzal coordinated the title in accordance to the place he was playing at, in this occasion the Teatro Royal in Madrid. It was 1927.

JORGE DURÁN (Alfonso Jesús Durán) dies. Excellent singer, called Cajón. He was born in San Juan son of Andalusian parents. In Buenos Aires he devoted himself to folk singing for a short time. Once in tango, he reached his most glory from the beginning with Carlos Di Sarli (1945-1947). Later he alternated his activity as a soloist and as an interpreter in various orchestras. He kept singing until the end of his life.

FULVIO SALAMANCA is born. Pianist, conductor and composer. Above all he was an outstanding piano player, who shined for his use of a clear rhythmic beat. In March of 1940 he joined Juan D’Arienzo’s orchestra where he stayed for 17 years and recorded 380 themes. He was able to keep and improve the style of this orchestra. Let’s listen.

ERNESTO FAMÁ is born. He was one of the first to distinguish himself as a refrain singer. At the beginning, in the orchestras, the role of the singer was limited to only singing the refrain, the stanza that gets repeated throughout the song. He recorded more than 350 themes. He did it with Di Sarli, Fresedo, and the Tipica Victor among others. With Francisco Canaro he gained his fame singing almost 240 songs.

On this date Osvaldo Fresedo records with his sextet a tango that is heard in milongas every one in a while: LA CACHILA. Fresedo started to record tangos in 1920 in the United States. Two years later he continued recording in Buenos Aires. Between the sextet and the orchestra he reached a number that exceeds one thousand records. He was a member of the Guardia Nueva most devoted to music appropriate for dancing.
